The Lone Ranger Is A Good, Fun, Not Another 'Pirates', Movie

You know, I had never originally intended to see The Lone Ranger due to the fact that it seemed like it was using Johnny Deep to basically sell a movie about cowboys and Indians. Further more The Lone Ranger seemed like another over the top action adventure movie that Hollywood seems to pump out around the time of the summer. All of the above is true, but The Lone Ranger benefits from this in a way that makes it possible. Yes, the story is simple and silly but there is no harm in that. No harm in letting the viewer sit back for the ride without getting bored. This is credit to it's main leads Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. The Lone Ranger isn't prefect as it really felt like another, but yet not, Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The Lone Ranger will not test you in anyway, but instead entertain you with silly antics and lovable heroes.

The Lone Ranger begins off in a theme park where a boy dressed in as a cowboy and walks into a building showcasing things from the wild west when he discovers an old Tonto (Johnny Depp) in one of the exhibits. Tonto soon dives into his tale of how he meet John Reid (Armie Hammer), the Lone Ranger. The scene shifts back to the back where a young Tonto is on a train in chains beside outlaw Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner). When Butch attempts to escape, district attorney, John Reid steps in to stop the escape, only to be held at gun point by Butch's men. After a narrow escape, John decides to go after Butch and bring him to justice with the other Rangers. John and the Rangers walk into an ambush by Butch's men and everyone is killed. Tonto later comes on scene and burys the bodies to discover that John is still alive and chosen by the spirit horse. When John awakens, Tonto tells him that he is a spirit walker now, and reveals the traitor in the group of rangers. John decides to join Tonto in his hunt for Butch, but for justice, not revenge. John and Tonto soon find themselves on a wild journey that involves greed, justice, and war.

I did not expect to like The Lone Ranger very much, but I can say now that I enjoyed watching it. It falls into the category of a brainless fun movie whose purpose it not to tell a story, but to make the audience laugh and have fun watching it. I'm talking movies like Prince of Persia, and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. All the credit much be given to the two strong leads of The Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. It is one thing to give credit to an actor for being simply "amazing", but I honestly thing that The Lone Ranger wouldn't have been as good if it weren't for the strong performances from Depp and Hammer. They make The Lone Ranger worth watching. It's thanks to their comedic timing that the gags and silly antics seems that much more funny. Also the spirit horse was just fantastic as it was an ongoing joke throughout the movie. Not to mention that bird and how Tonto just kept feeding it. The final battle scene was just fantastic with the music (this music) and was just fun to watch as our heroes were battling on two moving two trains. You know that song is well known, but I never knew it was actually the Lone Ranger theme from the show. The soundtrack was fantastic as it was composed by Hans Zimmer. Yup, The Lone Ranger definitely falls into a popcorn movie category.

Now The Lone Ranger is no ice breaker as it didn't offer anything new to the viewers. In a way it was like a Pirates of the Caribbean point O as it was very similar. It had Johnny Depp playing a similar character to Jack Sparrow with Tonto and doing crazy things. It had our hero, John Reid, an honest man who turns to an outlaw like Will Turner. Finally have them do what they did a lot in Pirates of the Caribbean. It's just some characteristics that bear remembrance. The soundtrack had some likeness to some other films, like I swore I heard something from Sherlock Holmes (this) within the music at one point. The basic outline of The Lone Ranger isn't very complicated for those of you who wanted a rich storyline with twists and turns. It is literary point A to point B to point C. It didn't help that The Lone Ranger had this certain pace to it that made it seem longer, and did make it longer. Although I don't know where they could have taken away stuff to reduce time. Disney was really banking on the idea that Johnny Depp could bring in a audience, especially from the Pirates franchise. The Lone Ranger is nothing new to Hollywood.

The audience needs to think about what they want from The Lone Ranger when they go into the theatre. We're at this point in time where there is not a lot of big name titles out right now other than Despicable Me 2 and a few action films. Think, do you want the story? Or have a good time and have a laugh? The Lone Ranger offers a pair of charismatic leads and a fun adventure for you to go along for the side. I think if you like Pirates of the Caribbean, you might like The Lone Ranger. It really is a good family movie, although I wouldn't suggest taking young children with you due to some disturbing scenes. Our rating for The Lone Ranger is:

What did you think of The Lone Ranger? Do you think the film survived thanks to it's main leads?
